International History of Music Education

This week one of my recent conference speeches was promoted through a series of profiles of Music Education Leaders developed by Dr. Yang Yang at Education University of Hong Kong. Pictured here is an excerpt. In this speech I advocate for more local oral history studies in the field of music education in order to generate broader appreciation of musical heritage.

Click HERE to access the original version on the Chinese WeChat platform, which although little known in some countries has actually become the world’s most popular app, with over 1 billion users. Although mostly in Chinese, if one scrolls down, an English language version is also available on the website.

It is encouraging to see that these ideas are getting some attention, and I hope more of the history of diverse forms of music teaching and learning worldwide might be meaningfully documented as a result. This also fits what we are seeking to accomplish though the History Standing Committee of the International Society for Music Education, and through the field of historical ethnomusicology with the Deep Soundings book series on Rowman & Littlefield press.
